How does a DPF Diesel Particulate Filter work?
22 June 2023The DPF is a crucial component in reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines.
It is essentially a soot trap, capturing residual burnt fuel matter from the exhaust system. DPF's can however become clogged leading to a range of frustrating and potentially damaging symptoms to your engine. A blocked DPF filter should not be ignored.
Here are some of the most common symptoms to watch out for that your DPF may be experiencing issues
- A warning light. This is often the first sign and will illuminate on your dashboard. It indicates that the DPF is reaching its full capacity and needs attention.
- Reduced Engine Performance: A blocked DPF restricts the flow of exhaust gases, putting a strain on your engine. You might notice a significant decrease in power, especially when accelerating or going uphill. Your car might feel sluggish and unresponsive.
- An increase in fuel consumption. AS the DPF clogs, the engine has to work harder. This increased effort translates directly into higher fuel consumption.
- Frequent and Longer Regeneration Cycles: Modern diesel cars have a self-cleaning process called DPF regeneration, where the accumulated soot is burned off at high temperatures. If your DPF is becoming blocked, the car will attempt regeneration more frequently.
- Rough Idling and Stalling: If you let you r DPF become too clogged, the car will run rough and may even stall.
- Unusual Exhaust Smells: A heavily blocked DPF can sometimes produce a stronger, more acrid diesel smell than usual
- Engine Overheating: The restricted exhaust flow can lead to increased engine temperatures, potentially causing overheating issues.
Why Does a DPF become blocked?
Several factors can contribute to DPF blockage, including short journeys and start stop journeys. These conditions don't allow the engine to reach the necessary temperatures for effective regeneration. Faulty injectors or other engine components can also lead to a blocked DPF quicker than normal.
What to do if your DPF is blocked
If a normal regen wont work, then the first step is to take your car to a DPF specialist as soon as possible.
Removing the DPF and professionally cleaning it to remove the accumulated soot. In severe cases where cleaning is not possible, the DPF may need to be replaced. At The Carbon Centre we have full DPF facilities on site and state-of-the-art machinery to properly clean and maintain your DPF filter.
