DPF Regeneration is the process of cleaning the DPF whilst still on the vehicle, but why is DPF cleaning better?

What's the difference between DPF Regeneration and Cleaning?
Initially, DPF regeneration and DPF cleaning seem the same thing. But they are quite different. When your DPF gets blocked you may think that it simply needs a regeneration done in the usual manner. However, this is not necessarily the case.
The simplest way to explain it is that regeneration is the process by which the DPF burns off the emissions that it has filtered from the exhaust. DPF Cleaning however is different.
What does a DPF regeneration do?
In it's simplest terms, a DPF regeneration is where your DPF burns off the emissions that it has filtered from the exhaust. This includes soot and oil particles. It is generally done via a process of running your engine at a certain speed or revs.
During regeneration (whichever method you use) the temperature inside the DPF will get so high that soot and particles combust and burn up. Different methods can have different negative effects on the engine, but all cause damage of some sort which can potentially shorten the life of the engine.The method used is normally determined by the engine manufacturer.
How does DPF cleaning differ?
A DPF clean is done when the DPF is physically removed from the car, but it can also be done when it is in situ. The key difference is the cleaning process. When taken off from the car, It uses a combination of mechanical cleaning and an intense high heat to return your DPF to it's correct state. As it is done off the vehicle, it is completely safe for the engine and does a more thorough job. It means the DPF can also be inspected for physical damage.
